Introduction
Calcium pantothenate is a type of B vitamin and one of the nutrients necessary for normal growth of organisms. Calcium pantothenate exists in three forms due to its chiral carbon atom: DL-form (racemic form), D-form (dextrorotatory form) and L-form (levorotatory form). Only D-calcium pantothenate has biological activity. It appears as white or slightly yellow needle-shaped crystals or powder, with a melting point of 195-196°C (decomposition). It is soluble in water, methanol, glycerol, slightly soluble in ethanol and acetone, hygroscopic, slightly sweet, but slightly bitter. In terms of chemical stability, it is most stable in aqueous solutions with a pH value of 5-7, relatively stable in air and sunlight, and less stable in acids and alkalis.

Pharmacological action
Pantothenic acid is a precursor of coenzyme A and is an essential substance for multiple metabolic processes (including carbohydrates, proteins and lipids). It can participate in the synthesis of substances such as steroids, porphyrins, and acetylcholine, and can maintain normal epithelial function.
Applications
Calcium D-pantothenate can be used as a nutritional supplement. Except for special nutritional foods, the usage must be less than 1% (calculated as calcium) (Japanese standard). When fortifying milk powder, it is 10mg/Chemicalbook100g. Adding 0.02% to shochu and whiskey can enhance the flavor. Adding 0.02% to honey can prevent crystallization in winter. It can buffer the bitterness of caffeine and saccharin.

Calcium D-pantothenate can be used for biochemical research and as a nutrient in tissue culture medium. It is clinically used to treat vitamin B deficiency, peripheral neuritis, and postoperative colic.
