Overview
Titanium dioxide occurs naturally in titanium ores such as titanite and rutile. Its molecular structure gives it high brightness and hiding power, but it must first be chemically extracted and purified. More than 60 years ago, DuPont invented the chloride process for producing titanium dioxide, which has become the world's preferred technology because it can reduce environmental emissions and energy consumption while producing high-quality pigment products compared to the old sulfuric acid process. Titanium dioxide (or TiO2) is the most widely used white pigment in the industry. It is used in architectural, industrial and automotive coatings; plastics for furniture, electrical appliances, plastic belts and plastic boxes; paper for high-end magazines, brochures and films, as well as specialty products such as inks, rubber, leather and elastomers.

Titanium dioxide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula TiO2. It is a white solid or powdered amphoteric oxide with a molecular weight of 79.866. It is non-toxic, has the best opacity, the best whiteness and brightness, and is considered to be the best white pigment in the world today. Titanium dioxide has strong adhesion, is not easy to undergo chemical changes, and is always snow-white. It is widely used in industries such as coatings, plastics, papermaking, printing inks, chemical fibers, rubber, and cosmetics. It has a high melting point and is also used to make refractory glass, glazes, enamels, clay, and high-temperature resistant laboratory utensils. Titanium dioxide can be extracted from rutile by acid decomposition or obtained by decomposition of titanium tetrachloride. Titanium dioxide exists in three allotropic forms in nature: rutile, anatase, and brookite, in addition to several artificially synthesized crystal forms.
Food application
The US Food and Drug Administration stipulates that titanium dioxide can be used as a white pigment for all foods, with a maximum usage of 1g/kg. Titanium dioxide, a color additive, may be safely used in general coloring foods, subject to the following provisions:
(1) The amount of titanium dioxide shall not exceed 1% by weight of the food.
(2) Coloring foods that are not permitted under special standards published under section 401 of the act unless similar standards allow the addition of coloring.
(3) For coloring foods, edible titanium dioxide color additives may contain appropriate diluents as safe color additives, as follows: silicon dioxide, as a dispersing aid, the content of which shall not exceed 2%.
Product application: preserved fruits, jellies, fried foods, cocoa products, chocolate, chocolate products, hard candies, polished candies, gum-based candies, puffed foods, candy chocolate product coatings, mayonnaise, salad dressings, jams, solid beverages, konjac gel foods, etc.

Titanium dioxide is a versatile compound that is widely used in many fields for its excellent white pigment properties. It can be used as a white pigment in the food industry to ensure the pure color of food. In the non-food industry, titanium dioxide is equally important and is used in paints, inks, plastics, rubber, papermaking, chemical fibers and other industries. Titanium dioxide as a chemicalbook is a white inorganic pigment, known for its strong tinting power and excellent hiding power and color fastness, and is particularly suitable for the manufacture of opaque white products.
