Overview
N-Methylpyrrolidone is referred to as NMP, molecular formula: C5H9NO, English: 1-Methyl-2-pyrrolidinone, appearance is colorless to light yellow transparent liquid, with a slight ammonia smell, miscible with water in any proportion, soluble in ether, acetone and esters, halogenated hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons and other organic solvents, and completely mixed with almost all solvents Chemicalbook, boiling point 204℃, flash point 91℃, strong hygroscopicity, stable chemical properties, no corrosion to carbon steel and aluminum, slightly corrosive to copper. It has the advantages of low viscosity, good chemical stability and thermal stability, high polarity, low volatility, and unlimited miscibility with water and many organic solvents. This product is a micro-toxic product, and the limit concentration allowed in the air is 100PPM.
Physical and chemical properties
N-Methylpyrrolidone is a colorless to light yellow transparent liquid with a slight ammonia smell. It is miscible with water in any proportion, soluble in ether, acetone, esters, halogenated hydrocarbons, chemicalbook aromatics and other organic solvents, and is completely miscible with almost all solvents. It is relatively stable in neutral solutions; it gradually hydrolyzes in concentrated hydrochloric acid to produce 4-methylaminobutyric acid.

Uses
N-Methylpyrrolidone (NMP) is a polar aprotic solvent. It has low toxicity, high boiling point, and outstanding solubility. It has the advantages of strong selectivity and good stability. It is widely used in aromatic extraction, purification of acetylene, olefins, and dienes, solvents for polyvinylidene fluoride, electrode auxiliary materials for lithium-ion batteries, synthesis gas desulfurization, lubricant refining, lubricant antifreeze, olefin extractant, solvent for polymerization of insoluble engineering plastics, agricultural herbicides, insulating materials, integrated circuit manufacturing, semiconductor industry precision instruments, circuit board cleaning, PVC tail gas recovery, cleaning agent, dye additive, dispersant, etc. It is also used as a solvent for polymers and a medium for polymerization reactions, such as engineering plastics and aramid fibers. It can also be used in pesticides, medicines, and detergents. The main uses of N-methylpyrrolidone of different grades and specifications are listed below:
1. Industrial grade: lubricant refining, lubricant antifreeze, synthesis gas desulfurization, electronic insulation materials, agricultural herbicides, pesticide adjuvants, PVC tail gas recovery, adjuvants and dispersants for the production of high-end coatings, inks, pigments, etc. For example, it is used to extract aromatic hydrocarbons in lubricants to achieve the purpose of refining lubricants; because NMP has a large solubility in resin, it can be used as a solvent for resin chemicalbook processing to specifically manufacture coatings, floor paints, varnishes, composite coatings, film-forming, integrated circuit enameled wire insulation materials, fiber fabrics and adhesives and other products.
2. Ordinary grade: Extraction and recovery of basic organic raw materials, such as acetylene concentration and extraction of butadiene, isoprene, aromatic hydrocarbons, etc. It can be used as a solvent to recover acetylene from natural gas or light naphtha pyrolysis gas, and the purity of the recovered and concentrated acetylene reaches 99.7%; as an extractant to separate and recover high-purity butadiene from cracked C4 hydrocarbons, the recovery rate reaches 97%, and the purity of recovered butadiene is 99.7%; as an extractant to recover high-purity isoprene from cracked C5 hydrocarbons, the purity of isoprene recovery reaches 99%; when used as an aromatics extractant, due to its high solubility and low vapor pressure for aromatics, the loss rate of the extractant is low and the recovery rate of aromatics is high during the process.
3. Reagent grade: degreasing, degreasing, dewaxing, polishing, rust prevention, paint stripping, etc. in industries such as integrated circuits and hard disks that require strict control of metal ions and microparticles, such as photoresist stripping liquid, cleaning of precision instruments in the IC semiconductor industry, LCD liquid crystal materials, PCB printed circuit boards, and hard disks; and solvents produced by the pharmaceutical industry such as artificial kidney functional membrane liquid and seawater desalination membrane liquid.
