The appearance of chromium picolinate is purplish red crystalline fine powder, good fluidity, stable chemical properties at room temperature, slightly soluble in water, insoluble in ethanol, in which chromium is trivalent chromium. The whole molecular structure is electrically neutral and has hydrophobic properties, so it can be absorbed across the membrane in a complete structure, and the molecular structure is similar to that of the GTF part. In 1977, Toepfer suggested that GTF is a bioactive form of chromium, which is a complex of nicotinic-chromium-nicotinic acid with aspartate, glutamic acid, glycine, and cysteine. The GTF-like structure of chromium picolinate determines its better absorption rate and can play its biological function more effectively. It has been reported that the absorption rate of common chromium preparations is about 0.5%, while the absorption rate of chromium picolinate is 2%-5% (Anderson, 1996). Chromium picolinate is a muscle-strengthening and weight-loss booster that increases the amount of active AMP protein kinase (AMPK) in skeletal muscle cells associated with metabolic pathways, thereby improving energy balance and insulin function. The main effects are as follows: 1, increase the proportion of lean meat, reduce fat, improve carcass quality. 2, improve anti-stress ability and body immunity. Stress can cause animal yield reduction, and chromium nicotinate can increase the yield of animal products through anti-stress effect. Chromium is an important mineral that is essential for the release of insulin activity in carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism. In August 2005, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the production of chromium picolinate and confirmed that it is safe for use in the treatment of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes in humans. The FDA based its determination on Dr. Cefalu's earlier randomized, double-blind, placebo study in which chromium picolinate significantly improved insulin sensitivity in patients with high-risk diabetes.
